St. Petersburg Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in Russia. The Garden was based on the "Aptekarsky garden", founded by Peter I in 1714 for the cultivation of herbs, as well as rare and interesting "overseas" plants. The growth of collections and the importance of works on the study of plants led to the establishment of the Imperial Botanical Garden in 1823. For the years of 1823-1824, greenhouses have been built, the layout of which has been largely preserved to the present day. Since 1913 it is the center of the national botanical science and one of the largest botanical institutions in the world. The Botanical Garden has rich collections of live plants in greenhouses and in the park. In the greenhouses of the Botanical Garden, the area of which is about 1 hectare, and the total length of 1 km, collections of live plants numbering more than 7.5 thousand plant species, including from the most remote and exotic corners of the planet, are collected.
