New plantations with genetically improved properties of trees will appear in the Republic of Tatarstan

19 April 2018, Thursday

Today, in the Forest Selection and Seed Center of the Republic of Tatarstan, at the invitation of the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Tatarstan, employees of the Volga State University from Yoshkar-Ola conducted a master class on "forest surgery" - work on seedlings pruning and combining.

In Tatarstan in recent years much work has been done to revive the work on the genetics of forest cultures. This master class was held as part of the beginning of the silvicultural season.

"The process of trees planting is very complicated. Lecturers of the Volga State University have worked all their lives in this direction; they know all ins and outs of this work. We invited them specially to share their knowledge", said Timur Galiev, Head of the Reforestation and Afforestation Department of the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Saplings of the improved coniferous seedlings in the amount of 500 pieces are planned to be planted on special plantations in Arsk, Saby and Kaibitsy. Many years of practice and research have shown that grafted plantations are much more valuable than planting materials grown from seeds.

Such method of trees plantation has existed for a long time in the world, in Tatarstan there are even forest-seed plantations created in such way. The Ministry of Forestry of Tatarstan is actively working in this direction.

"Currently, the Forest Seed Center needs seeds with improved properties, at present the existing plantations allow collection of 25-40 kg of seeds. But we are ready to increase this amount, additional plantations are being created for these purposes", said Emir Bedertdinov, First Deputy Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Also today, the Forest Selection and Seed Center, located in Leskhoz village of Sabinskiy district of Tatarstan, was visited by representatives of the Federal Forestry Agency, who got acquainted with the work of the center. Annually 12 million seedlings with a closed root system are grown here. Representatives of the federal department highly appreciated the work of Tatarstan foresters.
