On February 1, the site https://www.treeoftheyear.org started voting in the framework of the contest “European Tree of the Year – 2019”.
Russia is represented by an oak tree growing in the Moscow Region on the territory of “Abramtsevo” State Historical, Artistic and Literary Museum-Reserve. Specialists of the Center for Wood Expertise found that the age of Abramtsevo oak is 248 years old. In its lifetime, the oak has seen many prominent figures of Russian culture — artists, poets, and actors. Gogol, Turgenev, Repin, Vasnetsov, Levitan, Surikov, Polenov walked under its spreading umbrage. One of the most famous works of Viktor Vasnetsov - the painting "Oak Grove in Abramtsevo" - written in 1883 is still kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery. The European contest was preceded by a national qualifying stage - "Russian Tree of the Year - 2018" contest. The main tree of the country - the mighty Abramtsevo oak was chosen among the 12 applicants, by way of an open vote on the website of the All-Russian program “Trees - Monuments of Wildlife”. According to the terms of the European contest, a children's drawing contest “Abramtsevo Oak, the inspiration of artists and poets - the Russian tree of the year 2018” was held among schoolchildren in the Moscow Region. Three works - the winners in the younger age group will go to Brussels to demonstrate at the awards ceremony for the winners of the European contest in the European Parliament. Awarding of winners of the children's drawing contest was held on January 30, 2019 in the Government House of the Moscow Region. It is worth noting that Russia is participating in this European contest for the second time. Last year, the nominee from Russia, an oak from the Belgorod region, took third place from 13 participating countries.
