Voting on the competition “Russian Tree of the Year – 2020” continues on the website http://rosdrevo.ru/russian-tree-of-the-year/#. It is organized by the NPSA “ZDOROVYI LES”.
The voting list of 12 unique historical trees was approved by the certification commission of the All-Russian program “Trees - Monuments of Wildlife”. Among the nominees are trees from Bryansk, Belgorod, Pskov, Lipetsk, Kemerovo, Tambov, Tver regions, Dagestan, Karelia, Chuvashia, Mordovia and Mari El.
The Russian Tree of the Year competition is a national qualifying stage for the European Tree of the Year international competition. Russia took part in an international competition for the first time in 2018 and immediately became a prize-winner - an oak from the Belgorod region took third place. In 2019, the “Abramtsevo Oak” from the Abramtsevo estate museum near Moscow was awarded an honorary second place. This year the representative of Russia – “Lonely Poplar” from Kalmykia - became the bronze medalist of the international competition “European Tree of the Year – 2020”, taking third place.
“The Russian Federation possesses a large number of unique old-growth trees of cultural, historical, natural and spiritual value. They are the national treasure of Russia, keeping for centuries the memory of past generations and outstanding historical events. We are justly proud of them and the whole world should know about them, - says Sergei Palchikov, Chairman of the certification commission of the All-Russian program. - Russia will participate in the “European Tree of the Year” international competition for the fourth time. It depends on your choice which tree will represent our country at the European competition in 2021”.
It should be noted that in the Republic of Tatarstan there is a unique tree - Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.), growing on the territory of the state nature reserve of regional significance of the complex profile “Dolgaya Polyana”. This tree received the status of the All-Russian value “Tree - a monument of wildlife” in 2012. The spruce is 134 years old and over 30 meters high.
