The decision to annually celebrate the holiday was taken in 1999 in Vladivostok at the meeting of directors of the Russian nature reserves. The initiative was supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation. The Day of Nature Reserve Worker 2016 traditionally is celebrated by those who are related to nature reserves and national parks of Russia, who preserve and revive the nature in its original form. The staff of nature reserves seeks to preserve the landscape in a state of nature and maintain this state, observe and monitor the endangered species of animals and birds, plants, insects, provide help for their further existence, and participate in raids and fight against poachers and offending persons.

As of today, in Tatarstan there are 174 specially protected natural reservations, the total area of ​​which is 168.85 thousand hectares. Thus, the proportion of lands turned to specially protected natural reservations in Tatarstan is 2.48% of the total area of ​​the Republic of Tatarstan. 25 specially protected natural reservations are classified as “nature sanctuary”, 11 of them have their own administrations. In addition, in the Republic of Tatarstan there are 144 monuments of nature.

On the specially protected natural reservations the unique landscapes in a state of nature and the diversity of fauna and flora are preserved. It helps to save from extinction a variety of rare species of animals, some of which exist today only in national parks, nature sanctuaries and natural monuments.
