Today the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation held a round table on “Scientific and personnel support of timber industry complex. Problems and solutions”. It was led by a member of the Federation Council Committee on Agrarian and Food Policy and Environmental Management, the Chairman of the Expert Advisory Council on Forestry, Tatiana Gigel.
The event was attended by senators, representatives of federal and regional government bodies, including from the Republic of Tatarstan - Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Tatarstan, Ravil Kuzyurov.
Tatiana Gigel noted that Russian forests made up about a quarter of the world's forest cover, but at the same time, Russia's share in wood processing in recent years was quite small.
“In the Address of President Vladimir Putin to the Federal Assembly, the country is tasked to ensure a breakthrough in the economy. For this, the forest industry needs to achieve growth in labor productivity based on new technologies and digitalization, increase exports of advanced wood processing products, improve the business climate, increase investment, remove infrastructure limitations, unlock the potential of regions, prepare modern personnel, create a powerful scientific and technological base", she stressed.
According to the parliamentarian, the Federation Council pays great attention to the problems of the forestry complex. “In January of this year, the Decree of the Federation Council was adopted, the purpose of which is not only to stop the plundering of wood, but also to ensure development of the industry as a whole. The work is carried out at all levels of government and is under the strict control of the Federation Council Chairperson, Valentina Matviyenko”.
Tatiana Gigel reported that the senators were working closely with the Government of the Russian Federation and were committed to supporting all ideas and projects ensuring the breakthrough development of forestry and timber industry.
According to the legislator, the current Forest Code of the Russian Federation does not meet modern requirements. “We have made amendments for a long time, tried to solve the most pressing issues, but the time has come to adopt the new Forest Code and achieve a breakthrough in our industry”, Tatiana Gigel said.
Mikhail Klinov, Deputy Head of the Federal Forestry Agency of Russia, noted in his speech that the scientific and personnel support of the industry was a primary task, the solution of which would resolve all subsequent issues and problems relevant to the forestry complex.
Natalia Lukina, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Center for Problems of Ecology and Forest Productivity of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke about the priority areas for development of forest science.
According to the results of the round table, recommendations were made to the relevant ministries and departments, executive authorities of the constituent entities of the Federation, aimed at resolving issues of scientific and personnel support of the timber industry complex.
