Day of military glory of Russia - Day of complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade is celebrated on January 27. The blockade of the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) during the Great Patriotic War was carried out by German troops from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944 in order to break the resistance of the city’s defenders, to seize it, and then destroy it. For almost 900 days, communication with the city was maintained only through the Ladoga Lake and by air. The enemy conducted intense artillery shelling and aerial bombardments of Leningrad. Due to food shortages, inhabitants of the city were starving.
During the blockade of Leningrad, more than 641 thousand inhabitants died (according to other sources, at least 1 million people).
At the cost of incredible deprivation and self-sacrifice, the city and soldiers of Leningrad defended the city. At the heart of this great victory lay mass heroism, unparalleled courage of civilians, ordinary Leningraders who managed to survive in the inhuman conditions of the blockade and save their hometown for posterity.
