Environmental activism will be the main topic of the Earth Hour 2020 campaign

13 March 2020, Friday

The annual environmental event Earth Hour 2020 will take place on March 28. This campaign, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is designed to draw attention to the need for a responsible attitude to the nature and resources of the planet. The event will start at 8:30 p.m. local time.

This year the main topic of campaign will be environmental activism. The campaign will be held under the slogan “Everyone can!” and will focus on five areas of environmental activism.

Environmental education. Conducting eco-lessons and eco-lectures, film screening of eco-films with subsequent discussion.

Responsible consumption. You can organize separate collection of garbage and batteries in your office, school or university, tell colleagues about what an environmental footprint is and offer to abandon disposable plastic products, colorful reminder announcements, etc.

Fight against illegal logging. Thanks to initiative groups, dozens of illegal logging are identified in different parts of Russia, while hundreds of hectares of valuable forests can be saved, information is transferred to the Rosleskhoz hotline.

Volunteering in nature reserves and national parks. Initially, a beginner volunteer is assigned only simple tasks: you can help with manual labor to equip trails and playgrounds, work as counselors with children, and remove garbage. And experienced volunteers after special training can be involved in more complex work, for example, recording the number of animals living in the reserve, and even anti-poaching raids as public inspectors.

Organization of “eco” charity events. It can be a self-organized dinner, tour, concert, garage fair or a proposal to transfer funds in favor of nature instead of a birthday present.

In order to understand what type of environmental activism is best for you and find out your “eco-destination”, WWF Russia offers you to take a special test on the Earth Hour website https://60.wwf.ru.

In addition, WWF has prepared an entire online marathon under the slogan #КАЖДЫЙМОЖЕТ - throughout March, participants will be able to make public eco-promises on social networks, take part in an eco-quiz, watch an exclusive broadcast of the best eco-films, and also traditionally mark their city on an interactive map of Earth Hour and increase the chances of your city to receive the title “Capital of Earth Hour”.

In 2019, 188 countries and more than 2 billion people took part in Earth Hour; about 30 million Russians joined the campaign.
