The column “Veterans of the forest industry” continues as part of the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic foundation. Today, its hero is Karmakov Arkady Ilyich, who has devoted more than 40 years to forestry.

Arkady Karmakov was born on May 1, 1939 in the Shumkovo village of Rybno-Slobodskiy district. After graduating from secondary school, in 1957 he began his career as an Assistant Forester at Almetyevsk timber industry. In the period from 1959 to 1977, he worked in the Kama timber industry farm as a Precinct Forester of Bersutskiy forest district. Under his leadership, a training room was organized, where there were entomological collections of forest pests, herbaria, methodological and other materials on protection of forests from pests and diseases. Seminars were often held there, as well as regular visitors to the office were members of the school forestry of the Pristan-Bersutskaya school.

Severe winters in 1978-79 caused massive drying of oak, maple and other tree species, after weakened forest stands were invaded by forest pests. At that time, the Ministry, under the leadership of Arkady Karmakov, developed and introduced aviation methods for treating foci of forest pests using new drugs.

In 1982, Arkady Ilyich graduated from the Mari Polytechnic Institute (now the Volga State Technological University) with a degree in forestry engineering. In 1989, he was transferred to the post of Inter-district Senior Inspector of the State Control and Forest Protection Department of the Ministry, where he worked until August 1999. With his assistance, a systematic state forest supervision was organized on the territory of the forest fund of the republic, a set of measures was developed to improve forest management in oak forests, etc.
