June 5 - World Environment Day

5 June 2020, Friday

Today, on June 5th, World Environment Day is celebrated in all countries, and Ecologist Day is also celebrated in the Russian Federation.

World Environment Day was established on June 5, 1972 by the UN General Assembly, and it was on that day that the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm (Sweden) was opened.

The conference adopted a declaration of 26 principles that should guide all states in their activities to protect the environment and rational use of natural resources. The declaration for the first time proclaimed that protection and improvement of the environment is the primary task of mankind.

On December 15, 1972, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was approved by a resolution of the UN General Assembly.

In 2020, the topic of World Environment Day is dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity - a framework that supports life on land and under water and affects all aspects of human health. Usually, on World Environment Day, cleaning events, forums, conferences on the topic of environmental protection, etc. are held. This year, due to the unfavorable epidemiological situation caused by the spread of coronavirus infection, all public events and meetings were canceled.
