In 2010, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation established the all-Russian program “Trees - Monuments of Wildlife”. Its goal is the search and preservation of unique old-age trees of natural, cultural and historical value for the Russian Federation, giving them the status of state-protected natural objects, formation of a single National Register of old-age trees in Russia, ecological and patriotic education of the younger generation.
Over 10 years, about 900 applications from 76 constituent entities of the Russian Federation with submitted trees for inclusion in the national registry were sent to the program website www.rosdrevo.ru, 216 trees received the status of “tree - a monument of wildlife”.
Within the framework of the program, the annual competition “Russian Tree of the Year”, which is the national qualifying stage of the international competition “European Tree of the Year”, the Russian Arboristics Championship (the use of rope-based equipment for tree care), round tables, meetings, conferences, and the All-Russian photo contest “Trees - Monuments of Wildlife”, children's drawing contest and other events are held.
