An ancient plane tree in Derbent became the “Russian tree of the year”

An ancient plane tree growing in the courtyard of the old Juma mosque in the historical part of Derbent (Republic of Dagestan) won the national competition “Russian Tree of the Year 2020”. 39,082 votes were cast for him. The winning tree will represent the Russian Federation at the European Tree of the Year international competition in 2021.

The second place in the competition was taken by the “Elder of the Chuvash oak forests” (25,720 votes), the third place was taken by the “Partisan oak” from the Bryansk region (11,260 votes).

Voting for the main tree of the country was held on the website of the All-Russian program “Trees Monuments of Wildlife” from May 1 to October 1, 2020. Recall that this competition is the national qualifying stage of the international competition “European Tree of the Year”, which has been held since 2011. Russia will participate in the international competition for the fourth time.
