Employees of the Nizhnyaya Kama National Park launched an online broadcast from the nest of the solar eagle (burial ground) Aquila heliaca, located in the Almetyevsky municipal district. The project is being implemented with the support of the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Biological Resources, PJSC TATNEFT, and others.
The goal of the project is to preserve populations of large birds of prey, to disseminate knowledge about the life of eagles inhabiting flat areas in densely populated and technogenically developed territories.
“At present, 200 breeding habitats of this species are known in Tatarstan, most of which are located in the southeastern regions of the republic. In recent years, eagles have disappeared from several habitats at once due to changes in agriculture. First, the local cessation of pasture animal husbandry led to a reduction in the food supply of the eagles. No pastures ‒ no species that eagles feed on. Secondly, the sharp decline in the number of the main food object ‒ the ground squirrel ‒ may also be associated with an increase in the use of pesticides in agriculture, ‒ said Rinur Bekmansurov, the project manager, ornithologist, head of the Nature Museum of the Nizhnyaya Kama National Park. ‒ There is also a tendency for the location of eagle nests near rural settlements, which is associated with the concentration of the food supply. It is important that people are tolerant of such neighbors: in no case should the nests be destroyed.”
